Low maternal folate levels are a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the fetus. Folic acid contributes to the growth of maternal tissues and is involved in the cell division processes that determine the development of the fetus in the womb. It also helps strengthen the immune system, reduce tiredness and fatigue, and maintain normal psychological function. It also intervenes in the synthesis of amino acids, in the metabolism of homocysteine, and in hematopoiesis, that is, in the formation and maturation of all blood cells.
